Medicare Wellness Exams in Greenacres, FL

What are Medicare Wellness Exams?

As you age, your medical needs change. A Medicare wellness exam helps people understand their current health risks and discuss ways to prevent disease and disability. A Medicare wellness exam is more in-depth than a simple physical. Medicare wellness exams are visits with your primary care doctor to review your medical and social health history.

The three main Medicare wellness exams include:

  1. Initial Preventive Physical Exam (IPPE)
  2. Annual Wellness Visit (AWV)
  3. Routine Physical Exam

The board-certified primary care physician at Columbia Medical Centers provide comprehensive Medicare wellness exams in Greenacres, FL. Learn more about Medicare wellness exams and call our family medicine office at (561) 432-3455 to schedule your appointment today!

1. What Happens at my Initial Preventative Physical Exam?

This visit is for new Medicare patients within 12 months of the first Part B coverage period. During this visit, you can expect to review your medical and social health history. You may discuss some preventive services to help you feel educated moving forward.

Your primary care provider will also perform a routine electrocardiogram exam. This is performed as a screening for the IPPE.

Is it Covered?

Yes, you pay nothing if you get your IPPE at Columbia Medical Centers.

2. What Happens at my Medicare Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) ?

At this visit you will develop or update a Personalized Prevention Plan (PPP) and perform a Health Risk Assessment (HRA). This will help you and your provider develop a common plan to analyze your health and wellness.

According to medicare.gov, at your Medicare Annual Wellness visit you can expect:

  • A review of your medical and family history
  • A review of your current providers and prescriptions
  • Height, weight, blood pressure, and other routine measurements
  • A cognitive assessment to look for signs of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease
  • Personalized health advice
  • A list of risk factors and treatment options for you
  • A screening schedule (like a checklist) for appropriate preventive service

Is my AWV a Health Physical?

No, a physical exam helps your primary care doctor figure out what the problem is and what needs to be done. When you’re healthy and feeling good, you want to stay that way. A wellness exam helps your primary care doctor understand what’s working for you and how to best support your continued health and well-being. It is a routine visit that can help you stay on top of your health and establish a positive relationship with your primary care doctor.

Is it Covered?

Yes, your AWV visits are 100% covered. If you’ve had Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) for longer than 12 months, you can get this yearly wellness visit.

This visit can help you develop or update your personalized plan to help prevent disease or disability, based on your current health and risk factors. You pay nothing for this visit if you visit Columbia Medical Centers. Talk with your doctor, however, because if additional tests or exams are performed during this same visit, Medicare does not cover them.

3. What Happens at my Routine Physical Exam?

A routine physical exam is not paid for by Medicare. You will be responsible for this exam. It typically is performed without relationship to treatment or diagnosis for a specific illness, symptom, complaint, or injury. Talk to your provider about this type of wellness visit to see if it’s right for you.
